When Does The Money Come?

WOW! Your website is now indexed by Google, Bing and Yahoo. You have found your niche and you have a great theme! You are writing content and you are now seeing some organic traffic.

The question that keeps going through your head is ‘how long does it take to make money online?’ ‘When does the money come?’

Even though you have been working like crazy building out your business, I wish I didn’t have to be the one to tell you – but the money won’t just magically appear. You can’t just wave a magical wand.

One of the secrets to bringing traffic or readers to your blog is writing quality content. You need to reach your readers and help them solve a problem.

How much content do you need – LOTS!

Content is King

Your blogging model will determine how quickly you start to make money online. If you pick the wrong model you could end up taking years to earn an income online.

A lot of people think they can make a fortune blogging. They start an online affiliate business thinking that all they have to do is set up a website and the money will start rolling in.

I’m not saying you can’t make good money blogging full time online, but I am going to say that in order to do so, you must put in the work!

People who work full time online all have something in common. Yup, you guessed it. They work hard, become an authority in their niche and they write quality content!

You might remember me saying in my previous articles that Content is King! The secret that distinguishes successful bloggers from dreamers is the passion for the niche that they are talking to you about.

Being Passionate About Your Niche

Once you have created your blog, you then want to show your reader how passionate you are about your niche. You want to ideally be writing a post or article a day, but producing content on a regular basis is what’s important.

By promoting your niche on a regular basis you should start seeing traffic arriving at your site in a fairly short time. Once you have traffic to your site you then have a pretty good chance of making money.

Bring On The Traffic

Traffic may come from Google in the form of Organic or from any number of social media sites – Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Instagram or Pinterest (just a few of the more popular ones)

You can also bring in traffic from YouTube, podcasts or email marketing. It is important to note here that Google organic traffic can take a while to establish.

YES, but it will take some time and lots of quality, relevant content to achieve results in this manner.

Communicate and Help Solve a Problem

To make money online with your blog you need to be able to ‘talk to your readers’. Communicating in a way to help your reader solve their problems helps build a trust and an authority. You need to do this before you can make money.

Monetize Your Site

Making money as a blogger required a method to convert your website readers into money spenders. There are lots of ways to do this once you have some traffic.

You can sell advertising space on your site or make use of ads from Google or Bing ads. With these programs you get paid according to the number of clicks you get on their ads.

Another way to make money from your blogging is to use Affiliate Marketing. My choice for affiliate marketing is Wealthy Affiliate (WA). I am a bit biased here as I do have my site hosted through WA. In my opinion it is the best Affiliate marketing program online. Check out my review here.

So you have hung in with me this far… and you might be thinking can I really make money online blogging?

The truth is, it all depends. You need to consider your niche, and how much competition there is within your niche subject area.

The great news is that there are billions of people searching for help online. Most niches offer lots of opportunities for you to get your foot in the door.

If you are writing quality content for a niche that has low competition and are publishing quality content of a regular basis (recommended at least one to two times a week or more if you can), then you should be able to expect to start seeing income in about 3 or 4 months.

If your niche is in a more competitive area, you can expect to wait a little longer for results. It is reasonable to expect organic traffic on your site somewhere between 6 to 8 months.

Ideally, getting regular traffic to your site increases your chances of making money in whatever niche or product you have chosen to monetize.

The truth is it may not be easy to make a name for yourself as a blogger in today’s world of online blogging. It was much easier to get started in blogging when it was still a new ‘thing’.

Now there are many people all wanting to get their niche or brand out there on the net.

It will take a bit of time, hard work and effort to build your readers and establish your authority and their trust. You may be surprised to know that the most successful (multi-million buck blogs) were established back in the early 2000’s.

So again I must reiterate that working online is not for you if you are looking for a get-rich-quick opportunity.

However, if you are okay with working hard and helping readers solve their problems then Affiliate Marketing may just be the right fit for you – and yes, you can make a substantial income with blogging!

With Google Adsense you can run ads from Google advertisers on your website. If you are new to blogging Google Adsense is an easy way to begin to monetize your blog, site, YouTube channel and more.

Google Adsense matches text from your site to their advertisers and then displays these ads into your website based on your content and your visitors.

These ads are from advertisers who want to promote their various products. Each advertiser pays different prices for their ads so your commission will vary.

This certainly can be a great place to start when looking to monetize your website! You can learn more and checkout some of the success stories through Google Adsense Home page.

You can make a lot of money by placing affiliate ads on your website. In almost any niche you can make money recommending products or services. Typically, you get paid every time someone signs up through your link.

Affiliate ads usually pay can offer a pay per click option while others pay per sign up where you can make anywhere for $5 -$500 (or more).

It is important to recommend only products or services that you believe in or use.

Reach out and contact the owners of your favorite products and/or services to see if they have an affiliate program. Check to see if they have minimum traffic requirements, and if so, just make a note to contact them when you have met these requirements.

To learn all you need to know to make money using affiliate marketing check out Wealthy Affiliate. They have an affiliate program that offers both a pay per person sign up for either their Starter or Premium Membership accounts.

Definitely worth your time to check this option out for yourself. Doing your homework with this company may just surprise you!

One of the most popular affiliates is Amazon and you can get paid whenever you link to a product listed on Amazon’s sites. Basically if one of your readers or visitors buy the product through your link then you get a commission.

Amazon is relatively easy to use and get accepted as a beginner in the affiliate marketing platform. They also pretty much have thousands of products to choose from and a wide range of commissions to be made.

Keep in mind, that usually the more expensive the product you choose to promote, the higher the commission.

As your website grows its readers and visitors, companies in your area of expertise will more than likely reach out to you to advertise for them. They may ask you to place banners on your site to promote their products.

You can also reach out to these companies in your niche area as well.

Typically, you can make anywhere between $100 to thousands of dollars per month to display company ads on each page of your blog.

Be sure to take the time to negotiate.

Some companies or brands will pay you to tweet their product or service. You can make some serious cash – some companies will pay as much as $500 + to tweet for X number of minutes in a Twitter chat. The more followers you have the more money you can make.

Worth checking into when you have built up some traffic.

This appears to be a popular way to make money. Depending on your niche you can run Facebook or Google ads.

This basically works by buying Facebook traffic. You might pay ‘x’ cents per click, and then a certain percentage of that traffic then signs up or buys something through your affiliate link.

Always do your homework and checkout the fine print.

Building a course or writing a book can be an awesome way to make money on your blog. You can host your course on WordPress or on a site like Udemy. You can sell your book as an ebook.

Many bloggers report making 6 figure incomes with launching courses and a few have boasted making over $1 million just from launching courses through their blogs and websites!

If you are thinking about launching a course or writing a book check to see what your competition is doing out on the net, as there are many bloggers that spend a lot of time building a course and do not do very well. (Remember to do your homework!)

One thing to keep in mind if you are building a course or writing that book is what will make yours different from what other people are already doing.

Ask yourself…

Why would your readers buy off of you vs someone else?

Would your readers be interested in your course?

It’s often a good idea to wait for awhile and build some quality content through writing articles and reviews on your blog, site or YouTube channel.

It is important to get to know your readers and what they are looking for as well as what they are willing to buy before you build a course or write that ebook.

  1. Hi Liz,

I´m happy you tell the truth here, that you need to work hard to succeed online. I´m also blogging, but haven´t made money yet. However, this doesn´t worry me, because I´ve heard you need to publish at least 30 posts before you can expect steady traffic. And that´s what you need to make money. Currently my post count is 19, so I still have a way to go. The good thing is, it´s not so hard writing about your passion, and anyone can choose a blog topic they really love.

  2. Hi Kirsti, Making money online, can take some time depending on a lot of factors. I’m so glad you have found a niche that you are passionate writing about.

  3. This was really an eye opener. I’ve been asking myself this question for the past couple months. When will I start seeing money from my blog. you’ve really spelled it out here, and now I have a pretty good idea of what I need to do next. I’m in a niche that’s pretty competitive so I need to find a way to stand out and that means looking for topics that people in my niche don’t usually talk about. Thanks so much for sharing this content. I’ve learned a lot from it.

    1. Hi Jen, Glad you found my article helpful. It is tricky trying to find ways to standout in competitive market niches. I agree that if you can find interesting and unique topics you will attract more viewers. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experiences.

  4. Hi Liz,

Great article and it is true, blogging is not for the faint hearted. Even if and when promoting on social media as it takes time, typically months to build up and audience of fans and followers that properly interact with your content and site that comes from those channels is not necessarily any quicker than Search traffic.

I am a huge fan of getting organic search engine traffic even though it is tough going it is accumulative and really starts to snowball after 6months, a year and 2 years, also notable traffic gains after 100 posts, 400 posts and when publishing frequency increases to greater than 15x per month – according to research.

    1. Hi Derek, So true. It does take time to build up your visitors or audience. I think it’s great that there are many option to build your traffic. That way new marketers can start where they are most comfortable while they are waiting for organic traffic.
I am also a big fan of organic traffic even if it takes longer. Thanks for adding some statistics on the number of posts in correlation to increase in traffic.
Making money online will happen, it just takes a lot of hard work and patience!

  5. Making money online as a niche is becoming a fierce competition these days and gone were the days when it had low competition. So no matter how much good content you post each week, it will definitely take longer time than expected.

As you said, it can take 3-4 months to show up a flow of traffic but it can take more than that for high competing keywords and especially in the make money online niche.

Google ads, social media, youtube or other advertising platforms are all saturated with quality content. So the best thing to encourage the readers is to fight on and not give up till the end of the tunnel which is not known when.

Doubtlessly you have given a good point on launching one’s own Course Online which can definitely bring dividend results.

Thanks for sharing your experience and I wish you all the best best of luck in your venture.
